3 Ways to Disinfect Your Face Mask

Face masks have become the accessory of choice in 2020, whether we like it or not. Until a coronavirus vaccine is released, it’s imperative that you use your face mask anytime you’re out in public. However, all of that face mask-wearing can make your mask dirty over time. Because cleanliness is part of the reason to don a mask in the first place, here are 3 good ways to disinfect your face mask.

Clean your face mask in the washer.

If you have a washer and dryer, the CDC deems regular washing in a load of clothing good enough for disinfecting your face mask. Just be sure that the material of your face mask can handle machine washing. You might also consider using a delicates bag, which will protect the elastic from becoming disheveled. Next, dry the mask in your dryer on a high-temperature setting, or set aside to air dry.

Wash your face mask in the sink.

No access to a washer? Rather wash your masks by hand? This process is simple as well. Fill your sink or a heat-resistant bowl in very hot water. Add dish soap to form bubbles. Submerge your mask in the hot, soapy water and allow to soak for at least five minutes. Once done, rinse with cool water and allow to air dry completely before wearing your mask again.

Apply a sanitizing spray.

On-the-go, with no time to run home and wash your mask? We can’t blame you. Luckily, you can use an alcohol-based sanitizing spray on your mask, much like you would furniture, linens, or other porous surfaces. Fill a spray bottle with rubbing alcohol and a small bit of water, if desired. Then, spray your mask liberally with the mixture. Allow drying before wearing.
