An Easy Way to Make Apple Cider in Your Slow Cooker

Can you believe it is already late September? Though it may seem like just yesterday we were preparing for summer, it’s now officially autumn – which means that it’s high time you swap your iced tea or lemonade for something a little more seasonal. Might we suggest apple cider?

Though you can technically purchase apple cider at the store, this is one of those seasonal treats that always turns out best when it’s homemade – not to mention, it’s easy to make at home, and the recipe is very accommodating, so you can add or exclude any ingredients you like! Check out this delicious recipe for Slow Cooker Apple Cider.

Ingredients:

• 10 to 12 apples, quartered or roughly chopped
• 1 to 2 oranges
• 3 to 4 cinnamon sticks, or 1 ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
• 1 tablespoon whole cloves
• 1 teaspoon whole allspice
• 1 whole nutmeg
• Water (about 16 cups, depending on the size of your slow cooker)
• ½ cup sweetener, like brown sugar, white sugar, honey, or maple syrup

Instructions:

1. Add the fruit and spices to your slow cooker.

2. Cover with water. Leave a few inches of space at the top of the pot.

3. Turn the heat up to high and cook the apples until they’re soft and mashable about 3 to 4 hours.

4. Mash the fruit in the pot to release their juicy sweetness. Cover and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes.

5. Use a strainer to remove the fruit and spices. Press them down into the strainer to make sure you don’t miss out on any juice. Discard or save the fruit.

6. Stir in your choice of sweetener.

7. Serve warm in a mug. Garnish with a cinnamon stick, orange slice, or apple slice, or leave a few floating in the slow cooker.
